I was drawn to this topic after watching the video on Orientalism. It immediately made me recall the movie from my childhood and think of how the characters were stereotypes of Middle Easterners. In fact, as a child I had thought that the movie took place in India and that the characters were of Indian descent. It wasn't until I looked into the historical background of the tale of Aladdin, that I discovered that it was meant to take place in modern-day Iran. There are scenes in the film which are specific to Indian culture, such as the snake charmer and the man swallowing a knife. This just reinforced how Disney lumped together various cultures and treated them as one people, who were mostly uneducated, crude, and distasteful.
My experience with this project was a positive one. I felt lucky to have met such insightful women to work with and whose ideas were creative and interesting. We worked together well, getting together on several occasions to discuss the film and get to know each other. I feel as though we formed friendships as well as a good working relationship. This was a worthwhile experience and a nice way to cap off the semester.
